I’ve been an avid cyclist since the 80s, so I’ve been through quite a few cyclocomputers. A few years back, I upgraded to a Garmin Edge 540 – and I’ll never go back!
Basically, there are two types of bike computers these days – those with GPS and those without. And while GPS-enabled models like Garmin typically cost more, the difference they provide is so significant that it’s not fair to compare them to basic bike computers.
You see, I’m one of those Lycra-clad fanatics on a custom-built carbon fiber bike yelling “on your left” as I pass. I’m on my bike a lot, so extreme care and consideration (including how much it weighs and what I get out of it) goes into every part I purchase. And while the Edge 540 does add a bit of weight, the added functionality and durability it brings more than compensates for a few extra grams.
Why Go Garmin?
Honestly, there are a lot of reasons. These are my top four:
1. Data – My 540 provides so much more usable data in a clear, easy-to-read LCD than any computer I’ve ever had. With connectivity to up to five satellite systems, you’re also getting incredibly accurate data – all of which is tracked and stored for the free Garmin app. Plus, easy-to-follow instructions let you customize the display to show data for Garmin accessories (see below).
2. Software Updates – Garmin units automatically update with new software so you’re always running the most current version. In fact, a recent upgrade gave Garmin users new community features, such as road hazard alerts, GroupRide alerts, and more.
3. Garmin Accessories – Soon after jumping down the Garmin rabbit hole, I added the HRM Pro-Plus Heart Rate Monitor, speed sensor, and Varia RTL515 rear radar/taillight. Each device easily synced with the head unit and has been revolutionary to my training!
4. Preferred Choice of the Pros – More than half of the riders in last year’s Tour de France rode with a Garmin. And the cycling community is just as committed because I see hundreds of cyclists – everyone from Lycra-clad fanatics (like me) to older folks on bicycles from the 1970s – riding with a Garmin computer, wearing a Garmin watch, or both.
Going Garmin
Every Garmin is an amazing piece of technology that will enhance your cycling experience. The only question is “how much Garmin do you need?” The most popular models are the Edge 540, Edge 840, and Edge 1040/1050. Garmin also makes Edge 530, 830, and 1030 models, but these models lack solar charging and other features.
And when it comes to features and functions, there simply are too many to list. So, do your homework to see which Garmin products suit your needs best. Whichever model you choose, you can rest assured it’ll introduce you to a whole new element of cycling!
